HOMECOMING FOOTBALL - OCTOBER 1ST 2022

Forgive me if I start today's diary entry with a stroll down my memory lane. The phrase "back in my day" is normally cause to stop reading or tune out while the old person (in this case me) goes on a meandering missive that normally ends with a fist shake, a grumbling and a "get off my lawn". I was , however, struck by what Homecoming means today and meant back in the day. When I was in school Homecoming was a big deal. Sign, banners, welcomes and events centered around a football game dictated the day. There were alumni gatherings and just a good old fashioned party. Now? The campus is silent. The school does everything it can to minimize the word homecoming and there is a little activity on campus for alumni to do. The issue has become the wild off-campus parties of an unofficial homecoming that has clogged streets, enraged residents and in general has the type of chaos that can be had with 100's of impaired students milling about on a residential street. Different times indeed. The idealist in me wants universities to "take back Homecoming" and move things on campus with more controlled activities, but the realist in me sees the off- campus shenanigans just shifting on-campus.

Why am I talking so much about this instead of the vaunted McMaster/Western match on the old gridiron. Well, if you're a McMaster fan the less said about this the better. The Marauders were steamrolled 47-14 by the #1 Mustangs in a game that was all but over at half time with Western swaggering off with a 33-0 lead. The Marauders are in tough with a 1-4 record and must run the table in the last three games, no small feat with two of them on the road.

As for the IceDogs? Back at it with three in three Thursday-Saturday with two of the games at home. The team enjoyed an Michigan sweep last weekend, beating Flint and Saginaw. Considering that pre-season predictions had them anywhere from 8 to 10 and getting zero respect for all the moves they made ,there is ample bulletin board material for the team.

Until the weekend!
