Strange Days Indeed

Writer's picture: Steve Clark Steve Clark

11 days ago I was sitting in Boston Pizza with my wife, daughter , two of her hockey friends and their families. It was something of a routine after Wednesday practice to go out and grab a bite to eat. The only change that day we thought was going to Boston Pizza rather than Turtle Jacks for the simple reason that kids ate free at Boston Pizza in March. Come gather around was the Boston Pizza commercial tagline. It would become a rather uncomfortable tagline given the events and developments of the past 11 days. That night we talked about the rest of the hockey season for our kids, and the upcoming tournament. We spoke of spring hockey and of myself transitioning out of my broadcasting season and into other activities. Now I sit here and terms such as "social isolation" and "flattening the curve" have become a part of everyday phrasing and terminology. My daughter who is almost nine years old will not go for school for at least two more weeks. CBC Newsworld has become the go to station and sports has pushed pause, if it was not fully cancelled. Personally, I saw my broadcasting season come to an end. Even if the OHL restarts its season it will do it without the Niagara IceDogs who did not qualify from the playoffs. No restaurants, no sports bars, no play dates or sleepovers, and playtime and walks are limited.

I've decided to blog/journal the whole thing. For me as a guy who already has struggles with mental illness, and in the past year have survived a heart attack and had both of my parents die in a three week span i do find writing to be therapeutic and helpful. That said, this will not be a journal of doom and gloom, and a poor me vibe. More so it will be insights, observations and stories from the perspective of my family and the people we come into contact with via social media or socially acceptable distances. Hopefully you will join me for the ride, or find some things you can relate with or laugh at.

All the best Steve
